Great Cousnel

‎"Because of the divine nature of women, we seem to be very sensitive to the Whisperings of the Holy Ghost. In the home mothers need to act as
the receiving station for the communications from a loving Father in Heaven. It is vital that you remain worthy and alert. You must avoid
getting too stressed or busy for the quiet promptings o...f the Spirit. (Donna S. Packer Women’s Conference - BYU - 29 April 2004.)

FHE Election EVE

ELECTION EVE

November 4, 2008 History was made. America in my opinion will never be the same. The one thing I know for certain is that if we are prepared we shall not fear. Less than a month ago this was confirmed by our loving Prophet Thomas S. Monson. I believe change is inevitable and that we will all experience hard times and trials but I also know that we can Find Joy in the Journey. If we do the simple things we have been asked to do then we can and will make it through to the end. Family Home Evening is one of those things. So a few months ago when I was in the Dr. Office I was reading in LDS Living about an idea for a family night. You teach your kids about voting and election, democracy and freedom and then you hold a family vote on dinner for election night. So we did it. The kids had a lot of fun and to our atonishment Jake new a lot about the elections. He knew who was running, and even what some of there agendas were. Dan and I were shocked. Zeak had a very strong dislike for Obamha and was hoping McCain would be the president. His main concern was that his guns were going to be taken away. After our discussion we voted on what tues. nights meal would be. Zeak lost and he was very upset. We tried to explain that this very thing could and would probably happen tomorrow night. He was very upset. Tuesday night didn't go as planned Dan and I ended up going up north to his Uncle Wayne's viewing. So the kids went to Tina's house. About 9:30 she txt us to tell us our son was in tears and very upset. They had just announced Obahma would be our new president. We hurried home and he had calmed down but the adults had not. This will definitely be remembered as an emotional election for everyone.

And the dinner election results were 1 Macaroni and Cheese 2 chicken pot pie 2 deer steaks (Zeak) Dan let Jake call the coin toss since he was the only Mac & Cheese vote. He called heads for Chicken Pot Pie. Needless to say Zeak was upset once again, wed night when chicken pot pie was served.

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing?
One way the adversary tries to derail our eternal progress is by perverting virtues into vices. Pressing forward is clearly a virtue, but running faster than we have strength doesn't get us to heaven faster-it just burns us out. Whether sauntering aimlessly or sprinting a marathon, seeing the dangers of each extreme is critical. This book helps readers find a healthy life balance.

This is a great Family Home Evening lesson that can be used this week and each child can be given a father's blessing. This is something that a lot of families do this time of year as the children are getting ready to go back to school. This will help set the tone and focus for the school year. If you don't have children at home it is still a great FHE lesson that corresponds with the last few Relief Society Lessons we have had.

Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy

My Great Idea: Sunday Stations

by Amy Ambridge

As an adult, I love a Sunday with nothing to do except nap and read. But this sentiment is not shared by children. To combat the problem, I started using “Sunday Stations.”

"I'm bored. There's nothing to do on Sunday." We have all heard it from our children at some point. My youngest daughter is famous for this refrain. How do we keep children entertained but still honor the Sabbath? It's easy to do by creating Sunday Stations that stop the boredom and help your children have a productive and spiritual day. My friend shared this brilliant idea with me.

The idea begins with the principle that Sunday is a day we need to use to renew our body and spirits. It is not a day to be wasted or spent in idleness. We have been counseled to engaged in many activities in our lives, and most of them are appropriate on the Sabbath. By creating stations that focus on different Sunday-appropriate activities, our children can honor the Sabbath and still have fun.

Four stations can be set up, though the number of stations can be adjusted to meet the size and needs of your family. The children rotate through the different stations. Each Sunday you can add a different "Surprise Station."

Pile up some pillows and make a "Listening Station." Children can listen to the Joseph Smith dramatization, primary music and hymns with the song books to follow along, dramatized scripture stories, Scripture Scouts, Alexander's Amazing Adventures, John Bytheway, or other age-appropriate, gospel-oriented material. This could include homemade tapes or compact discs of immediate family members or ancestors bearing their testimonies or sharing their life stories. You can even record yourself reading a story or sharing something important.

A "Reading Station" can include copies of the Friend, New Era, Ensign, and scriptures. It can also include illustrated stories from the scriptures for younger children.

A "Writing Station" can have slips of paper on which each child writes something they are grateful for, or they can write one thing that they like or admire about each family member. Young children can draw a picture of what they learned in primary that day or just something they did. This station could vary each Sunday to include things like journal writing. Letters can be written and pictures drawn to send to grandparents and missionaries.

A "Surprise Station" can include doing a craft from the Friend, cooking a family treat, playing a family game or going on a walk together. Each station can be customized for the different holidays. During Thanksgiving or Christmas you can expand a "Writing Station" to be a "Gratitude Writing Station" and write thank you notes and letters of gratitude or Christmas cards.

As parents, our lives are so busy that it is often hard to find time for all the spiritually uplifting things we are supposed to be doing with our families. I've found that using Sunday Stations has helped my family come closer to the solution. Instead of feeling guilty for not being able to cram in everything during the week, it allows us to use those Sunday afternoons to add more spiritually uplifting activities to our hectic lives.

Sometimes children can feel like there are so many "do nots" associated with the Sabbath. Sunday Stations can help children focus on all the wonderful things they can do on the Sabbath day and help them replace boredom with spiritual experiences and fun family memories.

FHE Inspiration (From LDS Living)

Inspiration
-by Shauna Gibby

Inspiration"The invitation to ask, seek, and knock for divine direction exists because God lives and Jesus is the living Christ." -Russell M. Nelson

Conference Talk:
For more information on this topic read "Ask, Seek, Knock," by Russell M. Nelson, Ensign, Nov 2009, 81-84.

Thoughts:
Every Latter-day Saint may merit personal revelation. The invitation to ask, seek, and knock for divine direction exists because God lives and Jesus is the living Christ. (Russell M. Nelson, "Ask, Seek, Knock," Ensign, Nov 2009, 81-84.)

Song:
"Tell Me Dear Lord," Children's Songbook, p. 176.

Scripture:
For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be taken away even that which they have. (2 Nephi 28:30)

Object Lesson:
Objective: To demonstrate the effect of personal inspiration in our lives.

Materials needed: An alarm clock.

Procedure: Display the alarm clock. Ask the class if they ever lie in bed and, without looking at the clock, know that the alarm is about ready to go off? Point out that those instinctive feelings can be very strong.

Story:
In October of 1984, I returned from an assignment out of the state, arriving home at perhaps eight P.M. I discovered that an urgent telephone call had come from the mother and father of a young woman whose husband had been diagnosed as having a tumor on his brain. At the time he was a patient in the University Hospital. A blessing had been requested at my convenience.

Activity:
Play "Hot or Cold." Everyone leaves the room except for one person, who hides a small object, such as a coin, key, or thimble. Most of the object needs to be in plain sight. The rest of the family then returns to the room and searches for the object. When someone spots the object, he or she sits down and yells out some prearranged comment such as "Hot dog," or "I know where it is." The rest of the family continues to hunt until everyone has found the object.

Refreshment:
Thumbprints

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned oats
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup plus 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
  • 1 (14-ounce) bag caramels (48)
  • 1/2 cup whipping cream
  • 1 (12-ounce) package milk chocolate chips

FHE from the Jan 2010 Friend

“Guide to the Friend,” Friend, Jan 2010, 48

  • 1. Read “Give Thanks for Everything” (pages 2–3), and discuss how Borghild Dahl was an example of gratitude before and after her sight was restored. Pass out crayons and paper and let each family member write one thing for which he or she is thankful in a corner of the paper. Then encourage everyone to try to draw what they named with a blindfold on. Remove the blindfolds to see how everybody did. Flip the paper over and draw the picture again, this time without the blindfold. Talk about how eternal perspective is different than sight and helps us to “see” our blessings more clearly.

  • 2. Read “Words that Build Up” (page 8) and complete the quiz on page 9 . Make a goal to speak kindly to and about each family member for a week. (You can find tips for setting goals on page 13 .) At your next family home evening, have each family member report on his or her experience trying to reach the goal.

  • 3. Turn to page 16 and read the poem “Precious Gifts.” As a family, decide how to show love for another family or individual you know. You could make and deliver cookies, send a card or letter, or simply make a visit.

  • 4. Read “The Candy Ball” (pages 44–45). Talk about what to do if you or someone else is choking. Demonstrate the universal distress signal for choking by holding the front of the neck with both hands. Encourage children to seek out parents’ help in any emergency situation. Explain the importance of prayer in knowing what to do in a crisis.

Thought of the Day

As we repent of our sins, respond with humility to our weakness, and develop and contribute our strengths, God’s grace is sufficient to save and exalt even the weakest among us.

Welcome to our Ward Blog

Welcome to The new Mona 1st Ward Blog. This is something new we hope you find a valuable resource. Please feel free to leave comments and interact on this blog.

New For Changes for Relief Society

There are some changes for the new year in Relief Society. Sometimes change is hard and overwhelming yet necessary for our eternal progression. To help aid our sisters in these changes we thought we would Spotlight them. More Details Can be found in the Ensign pg. 33.

President Jill Kay 623-0912

Jill is over Visiting Teaching if you have questions or concerns please call her.

1st Counselor RaNae Christensen 623-2093

RaNae is over the Teachers (lessons) and the music.

2nd Counselor Shawna Keyte 623-5072

Shawna is over the Relief Society Meetings (Old Enrichment Nights) if you have any ideas and suggestions we would love to know what would help you sisters.

Secretary Missy Marble 623-2999

Missy is over announcements if you need something announced please call her.

New Lesson Manuals this is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th Sundays of the Month

Since 1998 the lesson manual for the second and third Sundays in Relief Society has been Teachings of Presidents of the Church. In 2010-2011 these classes will study the newly revised Gospel Principles manual. In 2012 the study of teachings of latter-day prophets will resume in these classes.

Why the change? Since the Church began using the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church books, millions of new members have joined the Church. Many of them have limited experience in the Church and will benefit greatly by learning about the fundamental principles and doctrines of the gospel from the Gospel Principles manual. Experienced Church members will also benefit from a study of the basics for two years. Members can use the book as a personal study guide and can also use the manual to teach their children these doctrines in the home.

Relief Society Meetings (Home Family Personal Enrichment Nights)

These Meeting will revert back to a once a month meeting. Some will be large with a full meal and program others will be smaller with a light meal and lesson. The focus is still in (1) Increase faith and personal righteousness, (2) strengthen families and homes, and (3) seek out and help those in need. For January we are focusing on Health and Fitness if you have any home remedies, health tips and advice bring them.
