FHE from the Jan 2010 Friend

“Guide to the Friend,” Friend, Jan 2010, 48

  • 1. Read “Give Thanks for Everything” (pages 2–3), and discuss how Borghild Dahl was an example of gratitude before and after her sight was restored. Pass out crayons and paper and let each family member write one thing for which he or she is thankful in a corner of the paper. Then encourage everyone to try to draw what they named with a blindfold on. Remove the blindfolds to see how everybody did. Flip the paper over and draw the picture again, this time without the blindfold. Talk about how eternal perspective is different than sight and helps us to “see” our blessings more clearly.

  • 2. Read “Words that Build Up” (page 8) and complete the quiz on page 9 . Make a goal to speak kindly to and about each family member for a week. (You can find tips for setting goals on page 13 .) At your next family home evening, have each family member report on his or her experience trying to reach the goal.

  • 3. Turn to page 16 and read the poem “Precious Gifts.” As a family, decide how to show love for another family or individual you know. You could make and deliver cookies, send a card or letter, or simply make a visit.

  • 4. Read “The Candy Ball” (pages 44–45). Talk about what to do if you or someone else is choking. Demonstrate the universal distress signal for choking by holding the front of the neck with both hands. Encourage children to seek out parents’ help in any emergency situation. Explain the importance of prayer in knowing what to do in a crisis.

Thought of the Day

As we repent of our sins, respond with humility to our weakness, and develop and contribute our strengths, God’s grace is sufficient to save and exalt even the weakest among us.

New Lesson Manuals this is the 2nd, 3rd, 4th Sundays of the Month

Since 1998 the lesson manual for the second and third Sundays in Relief Society has been Teachings of Presidents of the Church. In 2010-2011 these classes will study the newly revised Gospel Principles manual. In 2012 the study of teachings of latter-day prophets will resume in these classes.

Why the change? Since the Church began using the Teachings of the Presidents of the Church books, millions of new members have joined the Church. Many of them have limited experience in the Church and will benefit greatly by learning about the fundamental principles and doctrines of the gospel from the Gospel Principles manual. Experienced Church members will also benefit from a study of the basics for two years. Members can use the book as a personal study guide and can also use the manual to teach their children these doctrines in the home.

Relief Society Meetings (Home Family Personal Enrichment Nights)

These Meeting will revert back to a once a month meeting. Some will be large with a full meal and program others will be smaller with a light meal and lesson. The focus is still in (1) Increase faith and personal righteousness, (2) strengthen families and homes, and (3) seek out and help those in need. For January we are focusing on Health and Fitness if you have any home remedies, health tips and advice bring them.
